Gabor Maté worked for decades as a physician, including in addiction medicine, before turning to writing and public speaking on trauma, stress and the mind-body connection, in books such as The Myth of Normal and In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. His framework draws substantially on Buddhist psychology's understanding of suffering and attachment, alongside Western medicine.
