About the teacher
Genpo Roshi (Dennis Merzel)
Dennis Genpo Merzel trained for over five decades in Zen and received dharma transmission within the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi. He founded the Kanzeon Zen Center/School and created the Big Mind Process, a structured experiential method for exploring different aspects of mind that draws partly on Western psychological frameworks alongside traditional Zen training. Over his teaching career he has given dharma transmission to numerous successors and conducted Jukai (precepts) ceremonies for several hundred students.
He currently teaches through Big Mind Zen / Kanzeon Sangha, offering online retreats, in-person intensives and pilgrimage journeys for a worldwide community.
Conduct & accountability: In 2011, Dennis Genpo Merzel publicly acknowledged sexual misconduct with students and resigned as a Buddhist priest and elder of the White Plum Asanga. A group of Zen teachers subsequently called for him to step away from teaching and address what they described as a longstanding pattern of misconduct.
