About the teacher

A quiet, direct path.

Haemin Sunim trained as a Zen monk in Korea after an earlier academic career in religious studies, and became internationally known through his bestselling book The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down. He briefly withdrew from public life in 2020 after criticism of his secular lifestyle, but by 2026 was again teaching retreats and courses.

He leads Tricycle's Meditation Month in January 2026, focused on Zen koan practice, and teaches retreats through DOHASA in South Africa and in Kuala Lumpur in December 2026, alongside leading the Dharma Illumination Zen Center and the School of Broken Hearts in Seoul.
