American teacher and co-founder of The Painting Experience/Process Arts, known for process-oriented painting workshops, retreats and online courses that emphasize spontaneous, judgment-free creative expression over technique.
Stewart Cubley co-founded The Painting Experience with Michele Cassou, an approach the organization traces back to 1976, and later co-authored the book Life, Paint & Passion: Reclaiming the Magic of Spontaneous Expression with Larry Baker. His teaching centers on process over outcome: trusting intuitive perception and direct inner experience rather than the mind's critical chatter, applied through painting as a secular, present-moment practice.
Cubley currently leads workshops, retreats and online offerings through Process Arts, including the Principles of Process Arts online course. Confirmed near-term in-person events include a workshop at Omega Institute and a longer intensive retreat on Moloka'i, Hawaii.
“There's a strange trust I have come to rely on. It's not some belief or philosophy but an actual feeling about the background in which the experience takes place. There's a certainty that whatever arises is right.”Stewart Cubley
